Renewable production on the island of Berlenga avoids emission of 81 tons of CO2

The renewable energy production, distribution, and storage systems, installed more than a year ago on the island of Berlenga, have already prevented the emission of approximately 81 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Thanks to the "Sustainable Berlenga" project, implemented by E-REDES, in close articulation with Peniche City Hall, it was possible to provide a long term sustainable electric energy supply alternative, replacing diesel production with renewable energy sources. The only existing generator on the island operates only in occasional and emergency situations. The island's renewable production to date has been 97 MWh, which would previously have required the consumption of 31,000 liters of diesel.
The investment of about 350 thousand Euros, supported by E-REDES, included the installation of 70 kWp photovoltaic panels, as well as a 150 kWh energy storage system and equipment that allows remote control and monitoring from the Company's command center. This entire system, located above the Fishermen's Quarter, was designed and implemented according to strict criteria of landscape and environmental integration.
