Be resilient
We are committed to preparing a capable response. We also believe in flexibility through adapting to change.
We try to anticipate the unexpected, we respond by pushing back and quickly recovering from crisis situations and always be prepared for any disruption.
The occurrence of an failure or disruption can significantly affect society and the operation of industries and services. Our Business Continuity Policy describes our commitment to crisis management and reflects the principles that govern our actions:
- Establish levels of prevention and resilience to reduce the impact of disaster or disruption;
- Protect employees, assets and the business in the event of a disruption;
- Resume normal business activities as soon as possible;
- Promote awareness of the role to be played by all employees and external entities;
- Make sure that procedures are cyclically tested and updated.
Maintaining focus and ensuring functionality in a disruptive scenario are the principles of our Business Continuity strategy.We believe that the needs of a secure society are guaranteed by this strategy, which ensures the relationship with our network of partners and our ability to manage change, anticipating risks. Our strategy is materialised through the Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), allowing us, in an organised and cyclical manner, to: Identify potential threats to the organisation and business; Quantify the impact on the realisation of those risks; Design and exercise defined procedures for different disruption scenarios.
In October 2015, we received the Business Continuity Management System Certification, awarded by the British Standards Institution (BSI), which has since been renewed in July 2018 and December 2021. In this way, we ensure that the Management System remains properly aligned with international best practices and in compliance with the International Standard ISO 22301:2019 - Societal Security - Business Continuity Management Systems. This certificate reflects the path we have travelled and the strategy we have implemented to achieve organisational resilience.
It is inevitable that any organisation will experience some kind of crisis. The most important thing is to be prepared to deal with a complex, anomalous and unstable situation. The most frequent disruptive events with significant impact on our business are usually associated with natural causes - extreme climate events - that cause simultaneous breakdowns in the power grid. Through the activation of various plans, we guarantee a coordinated, effective, robust and assertive response, even in the most critical scenarios. The Crisis Management Plan, which defines the Organisation and Strategic Management of the response, also makes it possible to ensure the alignment of the various plans in order to monitor the necessary actions in situations of actual or potential crisis, while also ensuring effective communication through the Crisis Communication Plan.
Although it is difficult to predict exactly when and where these events might occur, when they do, we ensure through the various Contingency Plans, how the company should reorganise itself in order to guarantee an adequate response. In addition to anticipating the need to prepare for an effective response capacity, the existing contingency plans are fundamentally aimed at guaranteeing an adequate coordination and reaction capacity to any disruptive incidents, so as to enable the prompt recovery of the essential services we provide to society.

The Plano Operacional de Atuação em Crise - Rede de Distribuição (POAC-RD), is a Crisis Management Plan that exists since 2009 to handle disruptive events on the Distribution network, can also be pre-emptively activated to prepare for high-impact events where there is an high concentration of people or high public visibility. Its goal is to minimize the impact resulting from power outages, as well as developing preventive actions to reduce the probability of such occurrences and its impacts. Besides laying down the necessary procedures to ensure intervention in the event of disruption on the distribution network, this plan also defines the chain of coordination and reorganisation of the organisational model, from human resources to operational means and material resources involved in the response, until services are fully restored. This constant effort earned us, in 2014, the European Award for the “Most Effective Recovery of the Year” awarded by the Business Continuity Institute, recognizing the company actions to lead with storm Gong, in 2013.
In cyber-attack or cyber-threat scenarios, PARIS - Plan of Action and Response to Cybersecurity Incidents, is the tool that defines and ensures coordination and immediate action in response to cybersecurity incidents, to protect our Critical Information Infrastructure and to monitor it until normality is restored.
This plan is extensively tested and evaluated, with the aim of training the teams, testing the preparedness and maturity of our organisation to deal with the threats of digital transformation. Our regular participation and involvement in cybersecurity exercises (e.g. CNCS - National Cybersecurity Exercise, the CiberPerseu - Portuguese Army), allows us to test and evaluate our ability to respond to and recover from cybersecurity incidents and improve co-operation with the relevant entities, allowing us to create synergies and explore the interdependencies between the different sectors of activity.
In order to respond to specific scenarios, E-REDES also developed various contingency plans, for defining actions to prepare and carry out alternative procedures, anticipating or quickly controlling a disruption by minimising exposure and/or consequences, ensuring minimum levels of service until normal operations are restored (e.g. Contingency Plan for Pandemic situations).
