Integrid tests innovative smart grid technology

The InteGrid project, coordinated by EDP Distribuição, has the participation of 14 European partners, an investment of around 15 million euros and aims to test innovative solutions that improve the operation of the electricity network to a total of 175 residential and business participants.

The selected participants will benefit from the installation of intelligent metering equipment, developed to allow greater interaction and availability of data on the power grid.

After a test phase, the Integrid project will now be implemented, at the level of the medium voltage network, in 25 facilities in Mafra, including industrial consumers, wind farms and cogeneration units. In the medium voltage network, advanced measurement units (RTU- Remote Terminal Unit) will be integrated, from which medium voltage generators and consumers can obtain information about their energy profiles, optimizing their processes and contributing to the management of the distribution network in case of technical constraints.

In low voltage, HEMS (Home Energy Management Systems) solutions are being installed in 150 customers houses at Alcochete, Caldas da Rainha, Mafra and Valverde municipalities. This system allows you to control intelligent equipment, from solar panels and batteries, electric vehicles and appliances. Through an App, the user can schedule the operation of equipment such as, for example, air conditioning or washing machines, thus managing its use more efficiently, benefiting from the best rate and taking advantage of self-produced energy through photovoltaic panels, generating efficiency gains

“The InteGrid project is based on an intelligent network infrastructure, developing additional features, with a view to improving the efficiency of the distribution network management, also enabling the development of new business models in the sector. Among the main developments of the project, the Grid and Market Hub stands out, a centralized platform for exchanging information between the Distribution Network Operator, consumers, production and market agents, in order to operate the network efficiently and reliable, as well as HEMS, the system that allows consumers to digitally access information on electricity consumption and production, controlling their consumption, costs and environmental impact, smart inverters and electric vehicle chargers.

The modernization of the network is essential for the energy transition and for decarbonization and projects such as InteGrid are essential for us to continue to trace this path of digitalization of the electrical network. ”

Ricardo Mendes André, EDP Distribuição Project Coordinator

“In the near future and through these new tools and information sources, the consumer will have access to new energy services, in new business models, in which he will be able to participate and maximize the utility of his energy resources. The microproduction and automation of ‘flexible equipment’ such as smart home appliances, electric cars and battery systems will have an increasing impact on increasing the energy efficiency of the network and the greater share of renewable energy in the entire system ”.
