During the early morning hours, the electrical grid in northern Portugal was strongly affected by adverse weather conditions, in particular strong gusts of wind and heavy rainfall, associated with the Elsa depression.
The most affected areas are located in the districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto and Vila Real, and the regular electricity supply has been interrupted in thousands of homes. The municipalities most affected so far are: Amarante, Braga, Guimarães, Esposende and Barcelos.
In view of the forecasted weather conditions, EDP Distribuição decreed, at dawn, its operational structure from "alert state" to "disturbed state" in compliance with its Operational Plan for Action in Crisis.
By activating these states in crisis situations, the company ensures the strengthening of the operational teams, so that they are promptly able to act in the replacement of the electric power supply. This mobilization takes place throughout the territory, and teams are expected to move in order to ensure a greater concentration of resources in the areas where there is the greatest impact.
Power interruption situations have been regularised, with more than 400 operational and 150 vehicles on the ground. However, weather conditions are expected to worsen in the coming hours.
EDP Distribuição remains in close coordination with local and national Civil Protection structures, as well as in permanent connection with IPMA to ensure up-to-date information.
