Data Protection in Smart Grids - EDP Distribuição and European partners

The final version of the Smart Grid Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) Template, a key instrument of compliance with the guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable to the energy sector and Smart Grid context, has been published.

The final version of the Smart Grid Data Protection Impact Assessment Template, a key instrument for compliance with the guidelines of the General Data Protection Regulation applicable to the energy sector and Smart Grids, has been published.

The development of this template, the first to cover the sector, is the result of a recommendation from the European Commission - Directorate General for Energy (DG Energy) - and supports organizations in managing the risks related to the rights and freedoms of individuals arising from the processing of personal data in smart grids, by systematising the risk assessment methodology and determining the measures necessary for its mitigation.

EDP Distribuição has contributed to its development since 2012, representing Eurelectric and the European Distribution System Operators' Association for Smart Grids (EDSO) in the Smart Grid Task Force Expert Group 2 (SGTF-EG2), and in 2016 joined with Enel, Alliander and Innogy, in the final editorial team that ensured coordination with several European bodies, including DG Energy; Directorate General for Justice (DG Justice - the body responsible for preparing the GDPR); Directorate General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect); European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and others.
