Fires in the central zone of the country - EDP Distribuição on the ground (in update)

As a consequence of the tragedy that devastated the country, EDP Distribuição currently has, and has had from the beginning, more than one hundred operational staff on the ground working to rebuild the distribution grid destroyed by fire. It is with great distress that the teams on the ground are facing the terrifying scenario they have to deal with as they manage to reach the affected locations.

Currently, in the municipalities of Pedrogão, Figueiró dos Vinhos, Castanheira de Pera, Góis and Sertã, there are about one hundred and fifty active operational personnel with the support of 30 vehicles, continuously working both in the operational centres and in the field. We have already connected 10 generators in burnt out transformation stations (we still have 4 more parked at the fire locations to assist any new situations that may arise) and we are building about 50 km of low voltage grid - it is not a repair of the infrastructure, rather we are building it from scratch.

After this work it is necessary to restore the connections to each of the houses in the places where they are destroyed. In the medium and high voltage grid our teams are building about 80 km of grid for which more than 1900 isolators are needed. 7 Remote control network systems will be installed to replace those destroyed by fire, and so far, there have been no damaged substations.

EDP Distribuição is constantly confronting new situations as the fire spreads and it has had to deal with some difficulties of movement of teams and equipment in order to guarantee, in coordination with the Civil Protection Authority and fire services, that we move our employees in absolute safety, along the possible open routes.
