SuSTAINABLE Project - Visit of the Project Officer of the European Commission

SuSTAINABLE, a European project coordinated by EDP Distribuição, hosted the 11th meeting of the consortium on 25 November. Of note was the presence of the Project Officer, who had the opportunity to see in the field the demonstration of the main features developed in the project. The visit was integrated in the 11th meeting of the project consortium. The tools and features developed under the scope of SuSTAINABLE were demonstrated at several locations in the municipality of Évora.

At the Montemor-o-Novo substation, the feature of Estimation of Status, developed in a tripartite collaboration between EDP Distribuição, Efacec and INESCTEC was demonstrated. This feature allows the estimation of the electrical scale of the Montemor-o-Novo medium voltage grid, based on real-time medium voltage (MV) data, historical low voltage (LV) data and the sampling of LV data in real time. This allows the estimation to be optimized and obtain information about the MV proper. Next, the Voltage Control feature was demonstrated, implemented in the parish of Nossa Senhora da Graça do Divor. This feature, developed by EDP Distribuição, Efacec and INESCTEC, mitigates the voltage problems verified when there is a very high penetration of electricity generation (solar generation in the case of the network under study) along a power supply branch, through the activation of a series of resources controllable by the smart grids infrastructure. In this context, photovoltaic panels and batteries were used that function as controllable resources by the voltage control algorithm implemented in the Distribution Transformer Controller (DTC).

In the SuSTAINABLE control centre, the remaining tools developed in the scope of the other features were demonstrated: including load forecasting (for MV), forecast of renewable production (as regards LV and the transformation station), and its integration in an aggregated manner in a tool for operation - SIFGRID. The event was a success, since it allowed the PO and the consortium to see the work done in the area of smart grids, focused on SuSTAINABLE, but also on the other EDP Distribuição projects. This demonstrated the application in the field of the solutions to the new distribution challenges, namely the growth distributed generation in the network, thus cementing the innovative position of EDP.
