With the aim of leading the energy transition, E-REDES has adopted 5G as an important catalyst for the smart grid in Portugal, ensuring that E-REDES' critical installations have resilient, efficient and secure communications.
Initially, in a pilot project, the teams implemented 5G in an urban substation that is essential for distributing electricity to thousands of customers. In this environment, it was possible to separate the company's data from that of the public mobile networks, thus providing a more efficient response to the substation's critical services, including remote control and support for the teams on the ground, while guaranteeing quality and safety levels at all times.
In a second phase, the resilience and security of these services will be further strengthened through 5G slicing. This mechanism will allow the creation of dedicated virtual networks on top of the operator's infrastructure, with a transversal reach, from the substation to the smart meter.
It's a paradigm shift in the way the network is used and how electricity is delivered to everyone's home.
