E-REDES discusses perspectives for the future design of the European electricity market

ERSE - Regulatory Entity of the Electricity Sector, promoted a seminar on "Perspectives for the Design of the Electricity Market" which counted with the intervention of José Ferrari Careto.

The event dedicated to discussing the (re)design of the electricity market was attended by several industry experts and an audience of about 900 participants.

The Chairman of the Board of Directors of E-REDES referred to the fact that Portugal already has 4.6 million smart meters installed, of which 703 thousand will reach Portuguese homes by 2022, which means 74% coverage. The Company's goal is to reach 100% by the end of 2024, with 61% of smart meters currently working with remote management.

The decoupling of generation and consumption will lead to the need to reinforce the grid in some circumstances to accommodate distributed generation and cope with increased transmission within the distribution grid.

Although the network continues to respond effectively to this pressure, it must be prepared for an expected 50% increase by 2025.
There is a need for investment and conditions must be created for this investment to happen. The good news is that the weight of distribution in the bill is low, around 8%.
