In 2016, the transport sector was responsible for 24.7% of greenhouse gas emissions in our country. This is the only economic segment where emissions registered a significant increase. In just 26 years, between 1990 and 2016, there was a 62% increase in this field.
However, Portugal is one of the European countries with the highest integration of renewable energy sources. Data for 2016 indicates a 65% incorporation, while the European average is set at 30%. Thus, the electrification of transport represents an opportunity for decarbonization with a potential far greater than that of many other states in Europe.
