A new protocol was signed this week with several leading environmental entities, to protect birdlife and make the interaction of birds, particularly endangered species, compatible with overhead high and medium voltage power lines.
The initiative, which took place at the company's facilities in Amadora, was attended by the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF), the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA), Quercus - National Association for Nature Conservation and the League for Nature Protection (LPN).
The new protocol will be in force for a year and provides for the implementation of several measures, including the preparation of collision and electrocution risk charts, the identification of lines areas that could pose a collision risk to birds in estuarine areas, as well as the evaluation of the durability and effectiveness of technological solutions implemented by E-REDES to reduce or avoid the mortality of species in electrical infrastructures.
Over these 20 years, E-REDES has voluntarily invested about 5 million euros in the intervention of approximately 700 km of the electric grid to protect the avifauna.
