CIRED Portugal 2020 - EDP Distribuição gathers specialists to discuss the energy transition

On May 14th, EDP Distribuição promoted the CIRED Portugal 2020 Workshop, under the theme "The Distribution Network Operator as a facilitator of the Energy Transition".

The digital event, broadcasted live, was accompanied by about 600 people and counted with the intervention of the Deputy Secretary of State and Energy.

"We are committed to promoting the transition of the energy sector, which necessarily requires the consideration of a new model for the transmission and distribution networks, based on the search for synergies between the various options, among them a rapid and progressive reinforcement and modernisation of infrastructures and reconfiguration and digitalisation of the market", assured João Galamba.

Organised by the National Committee of CIRED (International Conference on Electricity Distribution), this initiative aimed to share good practices and discuss the issues addressed at the world's largest conference in the area of electricity distribution in 2019, in the city of Madrid, where Portugal submitted a total of 47 papers, 25 of which had EDP Distribuição as their first author.

"For several years EDP Distribuição has been promoting this meeting, always with the same intention: to mobilise our teams and the national entities associated with the electricity distribution sector for innovation, the sharing of experiences and knowledge, stimulating a discussion forum", assured Ângelo Sarmento, chairman of the National Committee of CIRED, at the opening of the event.

The "technological transition as a driver for the Energy Transition", the "Planning of the Distribution Network in the transformational context of the electricity generating sector" and the "Distribution Network Operator as a promoter of the sector's flexibility" were the themes presented and debated throughout the morning by several companies and institutions linked to the electricity sector, namely INESC TEC, FEUP and EFACEC. In this way, this workshop of imminently technical character, promoted the approach of science and innovation related to engineering, business.

According to João Torres, chairman of EDP Distribuição, "it is essential to continue to invest in the development of intelligent networks, based on a careful and comprehensive analysis of the sector, aligned with the best European practices". "EDP Distribuição is much more than an energy distribution company; it is an active agent in supporting the energy transition and the decarbonization of energy consumption. This is the path we want to follow and we are confident that we will position ourselves as a reference in Europe", he concluded.
