Renewable energy at Berlenga Island

The project contributed to decarbonization by replacing diesel generation with photovoltaic panels.

EDP Distribuição, in close collaboration with the Peniche municipality, has begun the installation of photovoltaic panels on the island of Berlenga, with the aim of providing a sustainable energy supply alternative.
The island of Berlenga is located about 10 kilometers from the coast, which is why electricity is supplied by diesel-powered generators.

The Sustainable Berlenga project aims to replace fuel with renewable energy sources, ensuring quality of service and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

“Through this project, at the time of energy transition, it was possible to find a more efficient and sustainable long-term energy solution to make Berlenga a reference. Energy production through photovoltaic panels has also made an important contribution to the preservation of the island's natural heritage, ”said João Torres, Chairman of the Board of Directors of EDP Distribuição.

This project, which represents an investment near 350 thousand euros, is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will include the installation of photovoltaic panels in a rocky area, located above the fishermen's neighborhood, in an area of about 390 square meters, as well as as an energy storage system and equipment that will allow remote control and monitoring.

“The island of Berlenga is a pearl of the national territory and especially of our municipality. Using its natural resources to, in a sustainably and efficiently way, radically change the island's power generation model is a clear demonstration of how climate change can be minimized while improving safety and security supply of electricity to the populations. It is also a demonstration of how with planning, work and empathy, synergies can be achieved between public and private entities in favor of territories and populations, ”said Henrique Bertino, mayor of Peniche.
