600,000 LED luminaires installed by the end of 2019

EDP ​​Distribuição has a campaign for the installation of LED luminaires in a total investment of 78 million euros, under the Low Voltage Electricity Concession and Distribution Contract and in accordance with the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities.

 

Of this total amount, 56 million euros were invested between 2016 and 2018, and an additional 22 million euros is expected by the end of 2019, thus ensuring the reinforcement of the park installed in about 180 thousand units, establishing the number of LED luminaires at around 600 thousand.

This measure aims to replace obsolete luminaires with Mercury Vapor and High Pressure Sodium Vapor technologies by LED luminaires by installing multiservice Street Lighting columns and a new luminaire remote management system that provides visual comfort conditions, safety of people and property, and reduced maintenance needs in an increasingly sustainable manner.

Through this campaign, EDP Distribuição continues its strategy of modernizing the distribution network and adopting new technologies, essential for energy transition and decarbonization, in line with the National Energy and Climate Plan. This initiative reinforces the commitment of the Company and the municipalities in energy efficiency and intelligent management of the networks, with a clear improvement in the quality of service and will extend until the complete replacement of the three million luminaires of the Public Lighting (IP) park. National level.

By the end of this year, it is estimated that over 20% of the existing parkland in mainland Portugal will consist of LED luminaires, contributing to a reduction of the ecological footprint (by 40.3 thousand tons per year) and a reduction in consumption. electricity (at 80.1 million kWh / year). For 2019 and following years alone, the estimated saving is 16 million euros on the energy bill of the 278 Portuguese Municipalities.
