Integrid: Innovative Smart Energy Grid Project launched in Alcochete

The pilot project for smart energy grids was presented on 20 July in Alcochete, at a launch session of the project, which was attended by Fernando Pinto, mayor of Alcochete, and João Torres, chairman of EDP Distribuição. InteGrid, coordinated by EDP Distribuição, aims to develop innovative solutions in the area of smart grids, in terms of flexibility of energy consumption, electricity storage systems and production of renewable energy.

In this first phase, in Alcochete, the project will cover 100 residential customers who will have the opportunity not only to improve their energy efficiency but also to contribute to a more flexible electricity system, through tools that give access to more detailed information about their energy consumption, and allowing interaction with smart grids. EDP Distribuição will install advanced equipment for the production, consumption or storage of energy, such as solar panels, smart washing machines, batteries, heat storage systems and energy management systems.

According to João Torres, chairman of EDP Distribuição, "this project allows customers to take a more central role, in line with the latest European energy policy, since the equipment installed in their homes will enable them to become active consumers with the capacity to manage their energy consumption. This project is also an opportunity to strengthen relations between the community and the company. "Alcochete is one of four demonstrators of the project in Portugal, together with Valverde (Évora), Mafra and Caldas da Rainha.

This project involves 14 partners from 8 European countries and intends to install smart grid demonstrators in Portugal, Sweden and Slovenia. It has been approved by the European Commission with a budget of 15 million euros and lasts 42 months. Learn more about the project here.
