Notable among the results obtained, in terms of residential customers, is an annual saving of around 250-300 euros per year (in photovoltaic production and storage in self-consumption mode), which it is estimated may still be boosted by around 20 to 25% by the introduction of advanced flexibility management mechanisms.
SENSIBLE, with a strong demonstration component, develops projects on the ground in Portugal, the United Kingdom and Germany. The Portuguese demonstrator, located in Valverde, covers about 250 customers and involved the installation of photovoltaic micro-generation systems (for 10% of the population), energy management systems, smart batteries and thermo-accumulators, allowing not only energy production but also effective management of electricity consumption. In the distribution grid, equipped with state-of-the-art smart grid equipment, storage systems and an advanced automation system were also installed.
In Nottingham, UK, the demonstration focuses on energy-efficient storage management and participation in the energy market of residential buildings and communities. In Nuremberg, it focuses on the storage of multimodal energy in larger buildings, including thermal storage, cogeneration and different energy vectors such as electricity or gas. The SENSIBLE international project aims to provide the distribution grid with tools that allow optimized management in scenarios of strong penetration of distributed renewable production, while developing sustainable and innovative business models, involving management of the energy flexibility of the customers of supply companies. SENSIBLE is funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission and involves 14 partners from 6 European countries (Portugal, Spain, France, the United Kingdom, Germany and Finland).
EDP Distribuição, EDP Labelec, INESC TEC, and Siemens Portugal are the four Portuguese companies that are part of the project consortium in Portugal. The project was recently selected by the European Commission to be presented at Cleantech Capital Day in Sweden, one of the most important events in the field of Sustainable Innovation. This event brings together some 200 professionals: industry, investors, the public sector and start-ups.
SENSIBLE was also awarded the status of "Flagship Project" in the area of Energy Innovation by the European Commission. This distinction will allow the project / partners to participate in a number of key events of the European Commission, including exposure to Heads of State and Government under the COP24 in Katowice.
