Storm Ana damages distribution grid

Across the country, 850 operational staff work on the recovery of the electricity distribution grid. The electricity distribution grid was strongly buffeted by heavy rain and strong winds last night and this morning, nationwide. It caused serious damage to the infrastructure, mainly broken lines by wind-blown trees and overturned poles.

Although the bad weather was felt throughout Portugal, its impact was felt with special intensity in the central region of the country in the districts of Viseu and Coimbra. During the dawn of today, as a consequence of the significant technical and human means mobilized, it was possible to restore energy to the greater part of affected customers.

The work of locating the faults is being carried out using aerial means, so we hope to repair by the end of today the lines damaged by the storm (about ten) and to gradually restore normal services. EDP Distribuição has been on the ground since 14:00 yesterday, when alert status was decreed in accordance with the Operational Plan for Crisis Operations, in close coordination with local and national structures of the Civil Protection Authority, municipalities, fire services and police authorities, as well as permanent liaison with IPMA (Portuguese weather agency) to guarantee up-to-date information.
