UPGrid Project Press Conference

NOS, in partnership with EDP Distribuição, Jansen and Huawei, held a press conference at Parque das Nações to publicize the UPGrid project and the Narrow band IoT4.5G communication technology. The first operational pilot with smart electricity meters and NB-IoT communication technology has already started at Parque das Nações in Lisbon.

An unprecedented project worldwide that results from a partnership between EDP Distribuição, NOS, Jansen and Huawei, which will be completed by the end of the year. This solution combines emerging technologies in the smart metering of electrical power with the last generation networks for supervision of the electricity grid. The NB-IoT is a Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) wireless access technology, offering a wide range of advantages, including a battery life of up to 10 years, a gain of 20db over conventional GSM networks and support for more than 100,000 connections per cell. UPGrid is a project of the European H2020 program which has 19 partners from 7 European countries and 4 demonstrators (Spain, Portugal, Sweden and Poland) supported by different cross-cutting work packages that define the scope of the demonstration and analyse their results and impact based on the objectives of each project.

The programme involves partners with different knowledge and skills in the field of energy: distribution grid operators, equipment manufacturers and research centres The press conference was attended by João Torres, Manuel Ramalho Eanes, director of NOS, António Papoila, CEO of Jansen and Chris Lu, president of the Europe region of Huawei, who presented the project and shared with the media expectations about the project’s applicability.

João Torres had the opportunity to answer several questions about the subject, showing great confidence in the design and leverage that new inclusive technological solutions can bring to the universe of smart grids, as is the case of NB-IOT 4.5G.
