EDP Distribuição and municipalities invest in more efficient Public Lighting

A protocol between EDP Distribuição and the National Association of Municipalities (ANMP) provides for the progressive replacement of the current Public Lighting technology with LED technology.

EDP Distribuição, in conjunction with ANMP, intends to introduce the LED luminaire as the standard use material for public lighting, under the current municipal electricity distribution concession contracts.

LED technology has evolved significantly in recent years, becoming more mature on a technical level, with major repercussions on the diversity of supply and price reduction. From an economic perspective, LED technology is clearly more interesting today than high-pressure sodium vapour (VSAP) technology, in particular because of its superior energy efficiency.

EDP Distribuição has been monitoring the very significant development of LED technology in recent years and has already carried out several technical tests, the conclusions of which are that it is now ready for more widespread adoption.

Based on these assumptions, ANMP and EDP Distribuição considered it opportune that the parties agree to revise Annex I to the Model Concession Agreement.

Under the Protocol, priority will be given to the creation of new public lighting networks, the replacement of mercury vapour lamps and obsolete equipment. This initiative of adopting LED technology reinforces the focus on energy efficiency and smart grid management, with a clear improvement in the quality of service in an area of activity that is the exclusive jurisdiction of municipalities.

The national energy policy includes ambitious goals of increasing efficiency in consumption, for which public lighting can make a significant contribution.

Public lighting is an asset of great visibility and social impact in the municipalities and communities. Therefore, the measures adopted are another important step in the partnership between EDP Distribuição and the municipalities in the area of energy efficiency programmes and with a strong impact on the environmental area.
